KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson got exactly what they needed Sunday at Kansas Speedway -- Biffle by leaving the field in his dust and Johnson by persevering.

Biffle ran away and hid from the rest of the field in winning the Price Chopper 400 -- the third race in the Chase -- by 7.638 seconds in front of Johnson, who rallied from his 21st starting position to claim the runner-up spot.

Johnson, seeking his fifth consecutive Cup title, didn't leave the 1.5-mile race track with the trophy, but he heads to next Sunday's race at his "home" track (Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.) with the series points lead.

Biffle entered the race 140 points behind Denny Hamlin, who finished 12th Sunday and lost the points lead to Johnson. With his second win of the year, his second win at Kansas and the 16th victory of his career, Biffle heads for California eighth in the standings and 85 points down to Johnson with seven races left in the Chase.

Johnson leads Hamlin by eight points.

Kevin Harvick finished third, followed by Tony Stewart, who led a race-high 76 laps before his car faded slightly in the closing stages. Jeff Gordon won an intense battle with Carl Edwards for the fifth spot, and Matt Kenseth came home seventh, as Chase drivers claimed the top seven positions.

From http://www.indycar.com

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Already securing the bonus point for winning the PEAK Performance Pole Award, Dario Franchitti had two other goals in the Cafes do Brasil Indy 300 to earn the IZOD IndyCar Series championship for a record-tying third time.

One was achieved on Lap 118 of 200 when he clinched two points for leading the most laps, and he was on pace to win the race. That would seal the deal no matter where Power finished.

That all became moot when Power's No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car brushed the Turn 4 wall on Lap 135 while running fourth, which bent the right-rear wishbone. The crew wheeled the car behind the wall and made the change in 5 minutes, 6 seconds.

Ater testing the patch for a few laps under caution, he brought the car into the pit and climbed out of the cockpit.

Power, who posted five victories in his first full season with Team Penske, suffered his first DNF of the season in the biggest race of his career.

“The championship is won over 17 races, not one," Power said. “Obviously, I’m very disappointed with the outcome. I really wanted to win this championship. It was at a point in the race where I felt I really had to push because Dario had led the most laps and was leading the race.

“I was trying to get around (Ryan) Hunter-Reay and I got up a little too high and brushed the wall and bent the suspension. The Verizon team had a great season and we have a lot to be proud of. This has been the best season of my career in motorsport and I've learned so much. We'll be coming back to win this thing next year.”

Added team owner Roger Penske: "It was a tough ending to a good season for Team Penske. Will and the Verizon team did a great job all year. Our congratulations go out to Dario and Chip (Ganassi) for winning the championship. We will be back strong next year."

Franchitti, who entered the race 11 points arrears, earned the title by five points with an eighth-place finish. Five points over the course of seven months and 17 races?

"I'm just going to let it sink in, enjoy it. But I'm very proud of the achievement," said Franchitti, who matched Sam Hornish Jr. with three titles and winning in consecutive seasons. "I do believe the competition level in the series is going up. For whatever reason, we at Team Target both Scott (Dixon) and myself maybe didn't have the speed advantage we had last year. In some cases, we have to work harder to finish in the top five at races.

"So to come away with a championship after a season like that is very satisfying. And we look back to Iowa and think to that gear box (18th place), that took a lot of points away, and from then on it was a real struggle. But nobody on the Target team gave up. We did our best every single week.

"We find ourselves here again tonight. It was pretty cool. Great to be out there enjoying that feeling and that moment with my family, my friends, my teammates, it doesn't get any better than that."

Franchitti, who won the race in 2009 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to clinch the championship over teammate Scott Dixon and Team Penske's Ryan Briscoe, similarly overcame a points deficit entering the season finale.

It was the fifth consecutive year that the championship was decided in the final race, and the fifth time in the past six years that the Indianapolis 500 winner also won the series championship.

Dixon, who started on the front row, held off Andretti Autosport teammates Danica Patrick and Tony Kanaan to win the race (the difference between the two was 0.0111 of a second). Briscoe finished fourth and Helio Castroneves was fifth.

“After I crossed the line, I said it wasn’t a win but it sure felt like one,” said Patrick, who matched her season-best finish and moved up one position to 10th in the standings (all four Andretti Autosport cars were in the top 10 of the standings). “This was a great way to end the season. We have had our high points and low points and the GoDaddy crew pulled it together for a strong end to the year. Hopefully we can continue to improve the car to be better for next year.”

There were 18 lead changes – an event record and second to the season-high 23 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Vitor Meira finished a season oval-best sixth, advancing 15 positions in the No. 14 ABC Supply Co. car for A.J. Foyt Racing, and Marco Andretti was seventh in the No. 26 Team Venom Energy for Andretti Autosport. Dan Wheldon, driving the No. 4 National Guard Panther Racing car, and Graham Rahal in the No. 02 Quick Trim entry for Newman/Haas Racing also were in the top 10. Alex Lloyd clinched the Rookie of the Year award – a first for Dale Coyne Racing -- with a 12th-place finish.

Dixon's third victory of the season helped the two-time series champion hurdle Castroneves for third in the championship standings.

“It’s a big deal trying to get to third,” he said. “With so many yellows, it turned into a fuel race and we had a few rough restarts. This was a huge night for us, but more importantly for Dario for taking another championship. We definitely had a rough year and a lot of missed opportunities, but everyone is very excited about the outcome.”

Darian Durant tossed two touchdown strikes and also ran for a major, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders topped the Toronto Argonauts 27-16 at the Rogersw Centre in Toronto.

Luca Congi gave Saskatchewan an early 3-0 lead with a 26 yard field goal at 4:52 of the opening quarter. Former Rider quarterback Dalton Bell, traded by Saskatchewan to Toronto over the offseason, scored on a 12 yard run and, with the convert by Justin Medlock, the Argos has a 7-3 lead with 7:34 gone in the quarter. Darian Durant answered with a 12 yard touchdown scamper for the Riders. Congi's convert at 11:26 helped boost the green-and-white into a 10-7 lead. Medlock kicked a pair of second quarter field goals, from 18 yards with 5:58 left, and from 15 yards with 1 second. Those two boots mostly offset a 16 yard scoring strike from Durant to Chris Getzlaf and Congi convert with 2:15 remaining. Saskatchewan would take a 17-13 lead into the halftime break.

The Riders put the game away with a big play in the third. Durant found Andy Fantuz for a 66 yard touchdown catch and run just under two minutes into the final quarter. Congi converted again and Sakatchewan had a 24-13 lead just 2:15 into the second half. Medlock went bombs away with a 52 yard field goal with 4:02 to go in the third for the Double Blue, but Congi's 22 yard field goal with 6:02 remaining, set up by Keith Shologan's quarterback sack that forced a fumble, gave Saskatchewan the only points of the fourth quarter in the 27-16 win.

Darian Durant was 29-of-37 passing for 310 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown. Andy Fantuz caught 6 balls for 114 yards and a touchdown, while Chris Getzlaf added a major score by catching a touchdown pass. Luca Congi tacked on 2 field goals and 3 converts. For Toronto, Dalton Bell, in his first pro start, was 16-of-24 passing for 153 yards, while running for a touchdown. Justin Medlock added the other 10 Toronto points, with 3 field goals and a convert.

Saskatchewan, now 9-4 on the year, hosts the Argonauts in Regina on Saturday, October 9th at 4:00pm EDT.

KANSAS CITY -- Even back on May 23, when the Rays had their biggest lead in the American League East at six games, Joe Maddon wasn't about to get happy. He said it then, and he repeated many times throughout 2010 that he believed the race would go down to the final game of the regular season.

Turns out, the Rays manager was right on the money as the Rays and the Yankees will decide the winner of the division on Sunday.

Read the rest here.

Tampa Bay will start right-hander Wade Davis(12-10, 4.14), while Kansas City will counter with Sean O'Sullivan(4-6, 5.91)....The Rays hold the tiebreaker in the NL East. If both teams lose, Tampa Bay will still get the division flag....Rays third baseman Evan Longoria was out of the lineup again on Saturday as he recovers from a strained right quadriceps....Maddon held a team meeting prior to Saturday's game. He said he wanted to recap the club's season and remind them of the goals they set before it started. SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants rarely have done anything simply this year. Why should reaching the postseason be different?

They entered this weekend's showdown series against the San Diego Padres needing one victory to clinch the National League West title. That climactic triumph continued to elude San Francisco, which lost, 4-2, before another disappointed packed house Saturday at AT&T Park.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Pole-sitter Joey Logano was tired of finishing second -- and on Saturday at Kansas Speedway, he did something about it.

With a push from Nationwide Series points leader Brad Keselowski, Logano pulled away from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch after a restart on Lap 199 of 200 and held on to win the Kansas Lottery 300.

"It definitely gets frustrating, when you feel like you should have won a lot more races than what you have this season," said Logano, who has finished second six times this year and four times since his previous victory in the series, which came at Kentucky in June. "But it also makes you want it a little bit more and makes it a little bit sweeter when you do win."

Logano took the lead from Busch on a restart on Lap 194, when he ran Busch up the track and forced his teammate to back out of the gas. One lap later, Aric Almirola spun into the wall to cause the eighth and final caution and set up the two-lap sprint to the finish.

Right after the caution flag waved, Busch gave Logano's car a bump to express his displeasure.

"We'll talk about it and get over it," Logano said.

The victory was Logano's second of the season, the eighth of his career and his second at the 1.5-mile track, making him Kansas' first repeat winner in the Nationwide Series.

Keselowski passed Busch off the final corner to secure the runner-up position, as Busch crossed the stripe in third. Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

KANSAS CITY -- It wasn't a September to remember for James Shields and October didn't start in promising fashion for him, either.

The Rays right-hander had hoped for a solid outing on Friday that would propel him into the playoffs. But the Royals got to Shields for 12 hits and seven runs (six earned) over five-plus innings in a 7-0 defeat for Tampa Bay.

Read the rest here.
Notes: Andy Sonnanstine (4.1, 4.58) takes the mound for Tampa Bay tonight aginst the Royals' Kyle Davies (8-11, 5.31)....Evan Longoria sat out Friday's game with a strained left quad(But we all know his mouth still works). He hasn't played since September 23rd and is listed as day-to-day....The Rays need nine runs to match the club record for a season, 803, which they set last year. If they reach 800 runs, they could be the second team in history to score that many runs with a team batting average under .250. Right now, the Rays are hitting .249 as a club....With six more strikeouts, Rays hitters would match the Rockies' mark from 2009 for the largest number of strikeouts by a postseason-bound club.

Though the revelry everyone anticipated began almost spontaneously, the fun ultimately began too late.
